4/10 -

Amused whilst recovering at home by the various spellings of my name on my medical forms:
Emogin Fox
Emou Gin Fox
Imagu For

At dusk we take a detour on the way to my hospital check-up and drive up one of the hills looking over the city from the south. Night's falling and people sit out at makeshift tables as the hill drops into a vast jumble of flat roofed houses, glowing minarets and moving traffic blurred by the haze.

5/10 -

It begins to dawn on me as we jump on the metro to try and find the place we'll be studying in Mounira district, that the mixed reception of stares, friendly grins, smirks, and the spirited 'Welcome to Egypt' that the englishman attracts will carry on after a month, a year, 10 years... being fluent isn't going to dim the glow of my white skin,
Mouira is great. Big public buildings (with wordy official titles for not much meaning), schools, wasing lines, shops stacking caged chickens and rabbits out on the roads, and crumbling brick houses with rugs thrown out of the windows - it's grubbily charming and familiar as it acts out a routine of cafe trade, kids travelling to and from its many schools, and the metro rattling by on its way to the centre day in, day out.

We find ourselves a 'real' egyptian cafe to collapse in the shade of, and as we're cooled by a squeaky fan that looks like it's about to take off, have 'chai' tea served to the rocky table (an easy order as it's the only thing on the menu) and breath in the sweet fruity smoke of sheesha pipes as toothless old men take long draws as they while away the afternoon.
