i have had 4 days here in the capital of uruguay. 2 days of incessant rain and 2 days of glorious sunshine.

i have spent the last 2 nights with servas and anita has been an amazing host - giving me a city tour, taking me to markets, and even a modern dance show last night (which is one of my FAVOURITE things to do and i've been missing it!!).

this city is small but perfectly formed, with it's mix of old-world character (in the ciudad vieja), beaches (like a mini-copacabana), parks, and bustling central city.

the ciudad vieja (old city) was the highlight for me. it is filled with old buildings - both crumbling and restored. the streets are pedestian only and filled with restaurants and bars. we went on a saturday when the place was buzzing with people there for the street market and there were performers dancing, drumming, all sorts. here there is also a 'scupture walk' which is a pedestrian street filled with modern sculptures - very cool!

also, at the end of the old town, when you walk to the harbour, you find the mercardo del puerto which is brimming over with restaurants serving local specialities. to wander through here at lunch-time was wonderful, with the place filled with the happy chatter of diners and the multitude of parilla restaurants creating a fog of meat-scented smoke. a very choice place.

i have taken heaps of photos, so they will hopefully give you a sense of the place.

much love,
