Natural Disaster Update
Entry 42 of 64 | show all | print this entry |
Hello Everyone! Those of you who have been following the news lately might have found cause to be worried about me. Well let me put your minds at ease. Everything here is A-OK.
Yes we have had a lot of Earthly activity lately. We had a 7.0 on-the-Richter Scale earthquake on October 15. While that is a very huge earthquake, for me it was more cool than scary. I was in class at the time. All of a sudden, the room swayed left, then right, then back again, and the walls gave out a loud creak. I looked out the window and saw a traffic light swaying like it was going to snap off. This lasted for about thirty seconds and then all was quiet again. There was a small aftershock Saturday night around 9pm. I was eating dinner in a restaurant with a friend. Suddenly, it felt like there was a large truck rumbling by, but the restaurant was located in an alley that could not have accommodated a large truck. Again, nothing big. And yes, we had another typhoon this past Sun./Mon. night. It gave us all a day off of work on Monday and didn't cause any damage, as far as I could tell (except to my beauty sleep, because when my friends and I found out on Sunday night that we had the next day off, we stayed at the Salsa club where we were and enjoyed ourselves into the wee hours of the morning, occasionally looking outside to marvel at the howling winds and rain). And then Monday was a wonderfully relaxing day in my apartment, where I read, napped, watched TV, and cooked food with my roommates. One of my students had flooding in her apartment, but that's the only real damage I heard about. Aside from the occasional natural disaster, the weather continues to be warm during the day, cool at night, and clear. Fall is truly a wonderful season in Taiwan.
