The pictures tell the story, well, not the whole story. The drive from Haines to Tok put us on the first section of the ALCAN that we'd seen and let me tell you, permafrost can be hell on a road. We literally bounced along like some kind of 70 mile an hour drive-it-yourself roller coaster. It's a ride, let me tell you.

But to get to the ALCAN, you have to cross the Chilkat pass which tops out around 3600 feet and allowed bucket to see his first snow (see photo). He was frightened at first but warmed up just like he did at the beach. We saw a range of temps today from 41 at the top of the Chilkat to 74 here in Tok.

On the pass, the Canadians customs dude was a grumpy cuss. I think he was upset because he was enormously fat and had to live at the top of a snowy pass, all by himself. He asked me more questions than I've been asked. My favorite: "Who's dog is this?" If I had only been willing to spend the night in Canadian jail I would have said "Dog? What dog? Holy shit! Look at the size of this wildlife which has broken into my car! What the hell is that? Is it an Elk? You're Canadian, identify that! Don't your people carry around a chart or something? Get out Elk! Out! Bad Elk!"

Tomorrow on to Anchorage where mom gets off and things get weird.
