Today began in Juneau and we went to the Alaska Brewing Company where we went on a tour and bought a bunch of crap while they gave us free beer at 11 am. I proved that this was a mistake by backing into a fire hydrant on our way out. Awesome. Brilliant. However, Tony, who's very cool and gave us our tour gave me a bunch of tips for my journey after I drop off mom in a couple of days. He also watched me back into the fire hydrant. Did I mention... awesome?
Anyway, then we got on the 4 hour ferry to Haines, which was under consideration by the producers of northern exposure for being Sicily, however it lost our to somewhere in Washington, I think mostly because of it's remote location. It's cool, but it's far, far, far from civilization.
We ate dinner at a place that stayed open for us whose name now escapes me. I should give them props.. I'll check for a name tomorrow. The guy who was our server/ maybe owner/ everything said that in the summer Haines is great, but in the winter when the pass closes and the Barge (they are supplied entirely by barge from Seattle) can't get in, everyone gets a little weird. I can also imagine. Haines gets something like 90 + inches of snow, so people might get a little cabin fever when there's only three hours of daylight or less.
Tomorrow we set off for Tok, which is across Canada from here. I suspect the pictures will be gorgeous and the drive may be long. We met some folks from Anchorage who said that it was easy to get jobs in Anchorage, but also said that they are doing the drive that we are breaking into two days in one day. Maybe he's a bad ass.
Maybe I'll look for work in Achorage, but I would have to get a haircut. I guess that's a small price to pay. However, without seeing anchorage, I really liked Juneau a bunch. I liked the 30k people better than I might like 250k. I guess we'll see in a few days.
Anyway. Over and out from Haines.
