Goodness Goddess
Entry 7 of 9 | show all | print this entry |
Sorry it took me a bit longer to write than I would have liked. Getting to a computer is not always as easy as it may seem. We are now at maximum capacity at the house now- a whopping 97 people! All confined in the desert, in the middle of no where, with nothing much to do. No radio, no tv and no internet. I am really enjoying getting away from it all- I could really care less what is going on in the world out there right now. I'm so focused on my work here and that is all that matters. I've been told that we are living in a giant fish bowl, being watched by just about everyone. We are in a huge house in the middle of nowhere, with about 95 archaeologists living here. It is sort of creepy- in a big brother sort of way, but without all the tv coverage. Although, I made the mistake of mentioning to the Discovery Channel director that with the popularity of reality tv shows and archaeology programs how it might be interesting to do a Big Brother Dig House. She was hooked on the idea and I suddenly regretted saying anything. I don't know an archaeoloist alive who would actually agree to it without comitig professýonal suscide. But just know that if a show like that does come out- it was my idea!
On Friday- our only day off- I had intended to go to an internet cafe but I got distracted by the prospect of hanging out at the Hilton and seeing Spiderman. Sorry. It was really nice; a slice of some alternative reality. It was bizarre to have this enormous hotel in the middle of no where with no one in it but a bunch of grubby archaeologists. I am sure the pool water was a slightly murkey colour by the time we all got out! But the wierdest thing of all was the thunderstorn that we got. It was unbelieveable. And it is STILL raining, three days later. I have rarely been so cold, except working in Egypt in the winter! I was NOT prepared for this and am shivering as I excavate. Luckily, our shelter was put up before the storm so our work did not get trashed. But- wow- these storms are amazing. Last week it was over 100 (43) and today it barely tiped 60 (17). brrrr. The big news of the site is that we found a "goddess" figurine, that the site director has taken to calling the "fat lady", instead of goddess. As a result, we all got free ice cream, which is a big deal around here! This site is known for the "goddesses" but this excavation has never found one- not in 11 years of work. Until now. There has often been these goddess groups coming from Califronia (of all places) who come here and think it is highly sacred. When news of this gets out, I am sure they will be back here in full force!
