Ipod blues
Last year I erased John's ipod and this year I erased mine. And for the record, I HATE Itunes. Hate loathe despise. I attached my ipod (like normal), I opened itunes (like normal) and for some reason the damn program decided to do an "automatic update", which I did not ask it to do but it did it anyway. This update matched the music on my laptop with the music on my ipod, which was not the same and consequently overwrote everything that was on the ipod. And I could not stop it- there was no "stop" option. I just sat there and screamed, "Noooooooooooooo!!", waving my hands madly, which obviously did not do much good but I otherwise felt powerless. Keep in mind that I literally had over 1200 HOURS of material (books and music) on the ipod that does not exist anywhere else. And I was very proud of just having recorded 500 hours of internet radio onto the ipod last month, thinking "now I'll never get bored of my music". Needless to say, I was in quite a sour mood afterwards. I immediately ran over to John, thinking that he would just fall over laughing then once he recovered he'd remind me what a technological idiot I am. "And this from the woman who erased her own dissertation?" Yes, I did that too in 2004; no need to remind me. But instead, John told me that Marina just did the same thing about 20 minutes earlier. I hate itunes and I'm beginning to think a Window's based MP3 player is a better alternative. See, this is what happens when people like us do not fit the "ideal user" model. That is the problem in general with "models"- they are too rigid to consider alternative uses (a complete lack of agency). So I went to bed, moping. I was really upset by this. All my music has been replaced with audio books and a few CD's I borrowed from Mitch. Since most of my books are about Buddhism and spirituality, I decided that the best way to deal with the situation was to practice non-attachment and embrace the loss as a sign to move on from my past. But I REALLY like trance music- it is still the only thing I listen to. So the next morning, I asked everyone if they had any CD's I could copy. The problem is that everyone has ipod's , these days, so everyone's music is electronic. The irony is that John gave me a few CD's that I had burned from him last summer so I did get at least 4 of my CD's back.
So let this be a lesson to us all- revolt against Apple (sorry Chris), boycott Ipods in favor of MP3 players. Never again.
Musicless, Serena
