Art Party

As many of you already know, there is a long tradition of themed Thursday night parties here at Catalhoyuk. Costume parties were borne from pure boredom and has now assumed the status of "tradition" from the late 1990's. And this week was no exception. Maria is a particularly creative person and decided that we needed to have an art party where we all submit a piece of art and come dressed in costume. I was not particularly interested in the theme until I was inspired by a Michele DuChamps piece: "C'est ne pas un pipe" written below a picture of a pipe. I remembered this because I think was the cover of a Foucault book. So I modified it to: "C'est ne pas une brique" written below a picture of a mud brick. I'm fairly predictable, sadly. I made a frame for my brick using an old t-shirt and then sprinkled it with dirt, just to add a flare of authenticity. We made a "gallery" to hang all the art pieces, which ended up looking rather sophisticated by the end of the night. Soyna is here this year and she is Native American so she made a fabulous dream catcher from a hose, string and random feathers. Richard painted a portrait with movable eyes, which just added a fantastic flare of humor. Maria eventually came dressed as a Hellenistic statue, inspired by a pot we've been using in the dig house as a door stopper. Half the fun at these parties is the pure imagination one must employ just to make these costumes. A bit of paint, staples, tape, glue, scrap clothing and cardboard go a long way around here.
