This afternoon we arrived in Chiang Khong, a small town on the banks of the Mekong and the border crossing to Laos. We travelled up by minivan from Chiang Mai, where we spent yesterday (after a sleeper train journey from Bangkok).
Unfortunately our short stay in Chiang Mai did not allow us to sample any of the hill trekking opportunities for which the region is known, but Rich and I grabbed some bikes for the day and cycled through some lovely farming country on the outskirts of town. In the evening, after a seafood meal, we all wandered around the enormous night market, a good place to buy clothes and local crafts. Tomorrow we cross the border into Laos and hop on a boat for a two-day ride down the Mekong to Luang Prabang. Can't wait! Laos is a mysterious place which we don't know much about... and where internet access is likely to be tricky, so it might be a while before our next update!
