Arrived in Xi'an this morning after a gruelling 13-hour journey by sleeper train... I did't get much sleep, but Rich snored contentedly in his bunk!

Xi'an is China's most ancient capital, was founded by the first emperor of the very first unified dynasty, the Qing dynasty. It is of course most famous for its legions of terracotta warriors, so this afternoon, after a walk around the vibrant back streets and a little rest, we headed out to the archeological site, about an hour's drive away and dubbed the 8th wonder of the world.

WOW, what a sight! None of the photos you've seen can prepare you for the breathtaking beauty of the real thing. The 8,000 or so full-size clay soldiers are housed in three massive buildings, and many are still being excavated and restored Terracotta warriors

. Looking down from the viewing platforms onto the rows and rows of sculptures, the mind boggles as to the sophistication of the ancient civilisation that put soooooo much effort into the tomb of its ambitious emperor.

Tomorrow we have a free day in Xi'an - good thing, since there is so much to explore here. Being the eastern start/finish point of the ancient Silk Road, there is a sizable muslim population here, and this evening we will be sampling some local muslim fare. In fact, have to dash off now, as we're due to meet for dinner in 15 mins!

Until tomorrow, then, when I hope to complete the Beijing entry also telling you a little about our Great Wall visit on Tuesday, and the Forbidden City yesterday.
