Before our beautiful drive to Coromandel we stopped off at the AC Baths in Taupo, so relaxing. We rented a private tub where the 40 degree water was fed from a hot spring. Refreshed and smelling a bit like eggs we set off for the Coromandel peninsula. Lush green valleys, lakes and tree ferns all along the winding roads up steep hills that our automatic van handled pretty well.
We stopped at a proper campsite (with electricity) where we finally got to use the lamp and made friends with a huge gorgeous black cat that followed us around.
The following morning, armed with a spade that the owner of the campsite gave us (we didn't really know why at the beginning) we headed to the "hot water beach" where we dug a hole in the sand to soak our cold feet in the hot water. Nice. Some nut cases were lying completely in bigger holes.... brrrrrrrrr!
Next we went to the Cathedral Cove, an even more beautiful beach reachable only by foot. One of the most memorable days so far!
We then drove to Coromandel town taking a side road... with mud slides and unsealed surface but we had the "no worries mate" insurance so why not? Great views of valleys and it was fun to stop and cook some eggs for breakfast at the side of the road in the middle of the mountains.
