The guides were very funny and told us lots of things about the dragons and the other many animals that live on the island. They carry a long, thin forked stick as the only protection from the dragons. Not very comforting when there is a 90kg dragon sitting beside you and you know they have killed and eaten people before. The trek wasn't too difficult as it was only 5km but the heat even at 7 in the morning was unbearable
. For the most part the trek was relaxing, just looking at the amazing surroundings and spotting some buffalo bathing in the small pools of water. Then we came across two dragons very close to us. The first one was small and seems scared of us but the other one didn't mind us at all and had no problem walking towards us. They seem to come out of nowhere and they can move pretty fast when they want to. Considering there is no proper hospital in Labuanbajo we were pretty nervous. Amazing to see though.
After Rinca we continued on our three day boat trip towards Lombok island, stopping at small islands for snorkeling and swimming. Very nice, clear blue and green water with coral, colourful fish and plastic bags. Some very nice beaches on tiny islands but the amount of rubbish washed up on the shore really ruins it. Pity. Also the coral seems to be trying to attack Sue! I think seeing lots of dolphins and flying fish made up for it though. :)
Another very early start, after sleeping a few hours on the deck of the Perama boat, where we had excellent food and good fun watching the crew dancing the pocho pocho dance for all of us the night before. So we headed to Rinca island, part of the Komodo national park, arrived at 6:30 in the morning all ready to see the dragons. And we did! We saw a good few of them! So close! First the ones lying beside the ranger station and then also in the wild during the two hour trekking! Just amazing. Felt like being in a National geographic set! They look so slow but we kept well away from them after hearing stories of tourist being attacked a few years ago!
