Arequipa
Entry 43 of 60 | show all | print this entry |
Arequipa is a medium sized UNESCO city with heaps of beautiful colonial architecture, white washed buildings, dozens of churches, plazas, a cathedrals and a ENORMOUS sixteenth century convent which housed over 200 nuns. It´s here I had my first cuy, otherwise known as guinea pig, (very sorry Loz!) There wasn´t much meat, but a lot of skin and bones, the head was chopped off, but apart from that it looked and tasted distinctly guinea pig like. I shan´t be having an other.
The convent was interesting to explore, full of courtyards with orange trees, little chapels, roof terraces as well as the odd nun and heaps of breeding guinea pigs. I felt a little guilty...
On our second day we went to dinner with a couple of backpackers in their 70s and had some bizarre pre inca food washed down with some pisco sours, then attemted an early night in preparation for our 5.30 am departure to the biggest canyon in the world...
