Last night I wondered over to the paddlers fire and they invited me to share some wine. It turned out that the tent was quite hard to locate. But in the end it turned out good. They were just out for the weekend, sleeping under a tarp and cooking over a fire. Although they did have to shuffle cars. There is something magic about a campfire and I must do it at some point.
In the tree's I slept reasonably apart from being too warm! If fact it was much warmer here than in the open air out by the river.
The lack of open shops meant breakfast was a bit limited today and this was immediately apparent on the road. I was also on a finite water ration and it turned out hot. Todays route promised some interest because it meant revisiting Kelheim which i saw once on a daytrip about 20 years ago and going to Regensburg a city I think is fabulous.

But first there was the cycling to be done. Through some hopfields, up a few hills, past the nicely named Bad Gogging and Siffling acroos some open fields away from the river and up the nasty hills into Kelheim. Basically these just kept going up and up through the woods and with the state of my legs it was hard work.
Kelheim is a small town dominated by a very prominent monument on a nearby hill celebrating the liberation from Napoleon. It also had a rather fine but obscure beer garden attached to a rather large brewery. Overall its quite similar although the beer garden now concentrates on expensive food. The monument is as it was. I also spent £2 on a fab ice cream here reasoning that I needed the sugar and fat. It was lush. Kelheim also had a net cafe but I didn't really have time.
>From here to Regensberg was bank holiday city with lots of people out fishing. As we got close to Regensberg the number of cyclists increased to dominate any roads we were routed on. Lots of people out for the day. There was also a rather neat powerless ferry that used the current to pull itself across while attached to a dolly on a wire suspended across the river. There were now people sunbathing.
Regensberg is as fine as I remembered it; a wonderful combination of river parks and history. I was looking for an independant hostel and have found it Free camp
Free camp
. Its very quiet but there's only a micrwave to cook with and I have very lttle microwave compatible stuff; just a tupperware box. No lockers either but it looks ok. Food supply should be better Tomorrow too as only cafe's were open today. Two nights here as I want to reaquaint myself. 150 kms from the austrian border, thats 2/3 days cycling.
Hostel has a shower in the shareed room, a terrace and a TV room but no wifi.
Went for a night time stroll in Regensburg. Its changed and there are a lot more cars. Also my memory of it is an impression rather than a specific set of images. So there are a lot more cars and parking, a lot more fashion
and art shops. The whole old town has become more of what it used be be. It's way better than I remember and would make for a fantastic weekend of cafe lifestyle in a historic setting. Then in the daytime you could ride the surrounding area's.
I also dropped by the hostel; I remember it as in a park but now its in a car park and nothing is familiar.
