The day arrived and it was time to load up... For the first time. A short ride to the rents for lunch, farewell pictures etc. Had the first touring chat with a passing cyclist 3 miles from home and began to feel that it might be possible to actually enjoy it. And saw a traction engine in a layby.

I was following the Icknield Way towards Luton, it's not high but the amount of walking was a bit ominous. These ancient trackways form a sort of alternative network and are designed for human scale locomotion. Going through Luton was novel; passed an ugly water tower, an urban trig point and took a splendid path downhill behind houses to some playing fields. Directly across these and a national cycle route appeared. This turned into an excellent way into Houghton Regis cutting behind houses and under the motorway in an almost straight line. On the way was a TV mast which seems to have been enveloped by a housing estate; the guyline bases have security fences and it sits in a restricted open area ooverlooked by houses on all sides Familly sendoff

In Houghton Regis I went for a bargain carvery with Bri, C, A and J; £3.50 is hard to beat. Then we headed to a pub where the idea was to chat and drink real ale. Gasp. So collectively we all did and had a good evening. And bumped into a former colleague who's made a similar choice to me:). Since I haven't seen her for several years, I've never been in this pub before it seemed pretty random random. Hi Jo

Sleeping at C's tonight and a ride out tomorrow with C and R at 9am.

Cycling 18 miles, The company and drinking good. It's a good way to leave; see you in Istanbul.
