Post-cusco, I wanted to go to a place called Huacachina. It's a tiny little desert town near to Ica on the west coast of Peru. The only thing separating Ica from the coast is about 70km of desert. I was told that the bus to Ica would be about 16 hours. When I bought my bus ticket, I was reassured that it would be 22 hours. Nevertheless the bus was incredibly luxurious. It had films and wifi and everything. The journey took 16 hours. It's always good to know that you can trust the people who run the bus service.
I had to get a taxi to Huacachina, and it really is one of the most extraordinary places I've been. A tiny little town surrounding an oasis in the middle of the desert. Very strange indeed.
Of course what better to do when you're in a desert than sandboarding?
The driver was an absolute psycho. It must be the most hilarious job. All you do is drive around sand dunes in a dune buggy terrifying tourists. Sounds pretty similar to Punting. Although telling the driver that, wasn't enough to get me a go at driving the car. Shame.
We went down around or 6 dunes. Those who could not snowboard were advised to go down on their fronts, and watching a couple of other people completely fail at going down on their feet, I decided to take their advice. It was insane. It's so insane how fast you go down the dunes. And how far you travel. We had two people in the group who could actually snowboard, and I was jealous of how much more impressive it looked.
Every dune we went down was bigger and steeper than the last, until the last one, which was enormous, and I'm pretty sure it was almost completely vertical. The driver just laughed at us as we went down. He also gets to watch tourists make fools of themselves on a daily basis.
We stayed in the desert until around sunset, it was amazing to watch the sun setting over the dunes. And we then went back to the hostel where I had a couple of drinks with the group, and just relaxed for the evening. It was nice to be somewhere where you just chill out for a bit.
