It's funny when you travel - you remember the places but you also remember all the people you meet and all the quick friendships you strike up. The odder thing it that you keep crossing paths with people in city after city or you see someone in the street and you realize that you saw the same person in a different city 2 weeks ago. You haven't spoken to them but there is a kinship all the same.
The odd thing about Whale Island was running into so many people who were living in Vietnam - most of them in Hanoi - but who were from different places
Whale Island was a true vacation from our vacation. There really wasn't that much to do. There was a computer but it was soooo slow that we didn't even dare. There were a bunch of old cast off books that you good borrow but they were almost all in French,German or Vietnamese. The ones that were in English were not very appealing. You didn't decide what to eat - there were no menus - you simply showed up between 7 - 10 for breakfast, 12-2 for lunch and 7-9 for dinner and ate was put before you. The food was all very good although I wish there were something else for Breakfast besides eggs.
We hiked the path around the island. We went up to the big rock and took a panoramic movie. We sat on the porch. We sat on the beach. We sat in the lounge by the dining room. We went sailing one day with Paul and Tinika - a great couple from Porland, Oregon. That was a blast and we even snorkled a bit. But mostly we relaxed and talked. Dinners lingered on for 2 hours, we sat in the little bar and chatted and talked with whomever happened by. It was the most relaxed I've been in year. AND I"M SO GLAD TO BE BACK IN A BIG CITY WITH PLENTY TO DO. No, really, I loved it but after 3 days, it was the perfect time to leave and we are now enjoying urban smells, sounds and life again.
