Arrived in Da Nang this morning on the first tour bus out of Hue. A beautiful 3 hour drive through rice field which ends with a long passage via tunnel through the mountain chain that separates Vietnam from Cambodia finally emerging on the flats of Da Nang province.
Not much to say about Da Nang. We will only spend the night here before flying off to Nha Trang. Although Da Nang is Vietnam' 4th largest city, it seems a bit character less and formless except for a whiff of Soviet communist architecture. The Lonely Planet warns that Da Nang has little to offer outside of some very nice beaches and the Cham Museum where we spent the afternoon oggling finely carved sandstone sculpture from the 5 to 11th century. (Google the Champa Dynasty. Very interesting stuff). Add to that the Cai Dao temple where we made a quick visit. You are first met with a handpainted sign which reads," All religions have the same purpose." Inside, there is a mural with Buddha, Jesus, Confucius and Mohammed standing shoulder to shoulder. It should be so simple!
Got our first mosquito bites today. But not to worry, weve been taking our malarone so we will be fine. Lots of street stalls selling immense snails with rice and veggies. We passed and went for pizza...lol. Da Nang is comparatively expensive- food, hotels ect. despite its lack of charm. And seemingly so used to a certain type of tourist ( business men) that Denis and I go about relatively unmolested. We are looking forward to our arrival in Nha Trang tomorrow. Our hotel is sending a car to pick us up at the airport. Then we take a boat 2 hours off the coast to tiny Whale Island where we hope to spend the three days of Vietnamese New Year in peace and quiet.

Hey Leener,
We got back to civilization today. We just spent the last four days on a smallish island off the coast of Vietnam. (Actually its would only have been an invigorating swim if you were a strong swimmer.)All the same, sorry for the silence but the internet service there on the island was a wierd combination of dialup and radio so... impossibly slow. So much to tell you all abo... show all

You two can write a coffee table travel book. Think of it, travel all over the world flashing pics and writing of your travels. Your journey sounds fascinating. Always looking forward to the daily installemnt. Love the philopsophy of 'all religions are the same' - how simple - too bad not true over here! The eyeball on the altar was a little overwhelming! Loved the tree altars. Thanks for taking ... show all

Thanks for the tree alter! Hugo any chance of sneeking out a live koi through customs for our ponds?!? I guess not, I probably shouldn't even have suggested it!?! Love the big eye, although not quite as comforting to kneel before it, as baby Jesus, or buddha, but I suppose there all only plaster or marble anyway!
love ya guys. love, kathleen
p.s.s Hi James Sie!!

That big eyeball in the church/temple/place-of-some-sort-of-worship kinda scared me.
Loved the bean paste that looked like grapefruit!
Kisses,
Linda
