Unfortunately the weather put a stop to Matt's skydive at Lake Taupo so we decided to keep going and continue the long drive to Wellington. The drive was was broken up by a few beach stops and another unique waterfall called Huka Falls, with water so blue it looked like the the valley was being flooded with some kind of domestic bleach. It was unreal. Another fascinating natural wonder New Zealand surprised us with.
As we approached Wellington it was time to ring around for a hostel. We were wanting to meet some friends from Manly, Sarah, Toni, Helen and Victor who were at the Nomads Backpackers. We didn't have the number for that hostel and as I was driving, I told Matt to ring Base Backpackers and find out what the number was. Matt being the very English gentleman that he is, did not want to do this as he deemed it very cheeky. Andrew and I looked at each other with a smile and told him to just bloody do it. He reluctantly rang, and told the unsuspecting guy behind reception that we were friends of a John Green, a name he conjured up from nowhere, and asked the receptionist to look on his data base for the imaginary resident. When the receptionist replied that he had no John Green on the computer, Matt said "well he must be at the Nomad Backpackers, I don't suppose you have the number there do you mate?" Now, I imagine if the receptionist was anything like I was as a receptionist in a hostel he probably answered something like, "yeah of course, the number is, and so on". Pleased as punch Matt jotted the number down, hung up and looked at us two up front and said, "did you like what I did there?" Andrew and I broke out into fits of laughter and quickly pointed out that he had made the poor guy behind reception work twice as hard as necessary, all because Matt thought it ungentlemanly conduct or whatever to ask the guy for a number of another hostel.
We chuckled all the way to the hostel and Matt and I checked into the backpackers while Andrew, in a bid to save money checked into Chez de Multi-Storey Carpark. We met up with the girls and Victor and started on the goon. We absolutely hammered it and in no time at all were completely pissed. We ended up in a couple of bars and the night was just a haze. We had a good time dancing on tables, not knowing where the hell we were. The next morning came all too early and after seeing absolutely nothing of New Zealand's capital city we decided to head back and make the 8 hour journey back to Auckland. Matt decided to stay and make his way to the South Island but Andrew and I had a flight home, as we head unintentionally been calling Manly, to catch.
There were a couple of sick stops on the way, but after dropping the car off, watching a few dvds back at Fin's pad and a bit of a nap, the two of us and Fin were back on a plane to Sydney. More thumbnails ...
