We planned to spend a few days here and relax as it has been non-stop traveling since Amy arrived. This is a small town completely geared towards backpackers. A must for anyone visiting Laos. The bars all show films, BBC comedy, Simpsons and Friends. A great place to chill but the main reason for visiting Vang Vieng is for the best bar crawl ever. You are given a tractor inner tube and stuck in the river. You float all day down stream and get pulled into the bamboo bars that populate the river banks. The Beer Laos flows and the Lao Lao Whiskey is given away. Each bar has a zip-line and a tarzy swing and as you get further down the river they seem to get bigger and bigger. Kerry and Jo were with us and reluctant to swing and fall into the river but with the right amount of peer-pressure they overcame their fears and made like Orang-utans. This was a brilliant day and we didn't arrive at the end of the river until it was dark and we were very drunk. We met a lad from Chicago and discussed American's over enthusiasm about everything and also bumped into the lads we met in Ratinakiri.
That night Amy and I crashed out in our room and Ben went off on a drunken wander around town with Jo and got lost.
This place is completely mental. The bars have a special menu where anything from magic mushroom soup to opium tea is available. We met some characters on the nights, an American holding up a $20 note asking everyone if they would buy him some water because he can't spend his note and barmy English in unstoppable fits of laughter.
On one of the days, the three of us and Kerry hired a couple of bikes and went on a mission to find some caves. We found a couple eventually and stumbled across a statue of Buddha and got shown around another cave by a group of young kids that seemed to come from nowhere.
Another night out followed and we met more mad people and bumped into Christan that we met in Malaysia and bumped into in Saigon and we also met up with Caitlin who we met in Halong Bay.
