Today was the most spectacular and physically demanding one of the trip so far; we climbed 2000m in 60km in 8 hours in first gear in pain. The beer, bed and dahl bhat were incredible. As were the views, the sense of acheievement and steepness of bends and slopes.

For the first time in yonks we slept with duvets and listened to silence outside. These were very good for the soul. In all of the villages we passed through we were met with quiet gentle smiles which was also a welcome change. We slept in a rented room of an old family house and ate mounds of rice, lentils, spinach and spuds with three generations of the family with kids tripping over plates. Today was an altogether brilliant and relaxing antidote to the steamy, dusty, noisy oppression of the plains.

Daman is supposed to have the best Himalayan panorama in Nepal but the April haze got in the way so we contented ourselves with the steep terraced slopes and villages of the Mahabarat range that we had climbed....and slept like babies.
