We couldn't leave Le Havre without finding out what this modern city, slightly clinical looking, was all about... We set off on foot after breakfast, and followed an easy way I had plotted along the map.

The more I read about Le Havre, the more I liked it. The city was essentially destroyed during World War II. Very little remained after it was bombed to bits...

After the war, architect Auguste Perret took on the task of designing a modern city. The architecture of Le Havre shows great consistency, with solid square façades and grey stone dominating the landscape. Lovely parks, wide streets able to accommodate cars and trucks, and straight avenues that make navigation easier than anywhere else in France, compensate for some of the more "stern" looking buildings. The excessively modern cathedral lacked character for my taste - but then, I am partial to old gothic grandiose churches...

After a quick but fun visit to a grocery store (always fun in foreign countries!), we left modern architecture behind and headed back out into the countryside. Our destination: Dieppe, with a stop in Etretat.
