Well, as the title said, Ulan-Ude is proud home of the world's largest sculpture of Lenin's head. Yup, just his head. Instead of being inspiring, or dominating, or whatever was intended for it, it just looks, well, a bit silly. A disembodied head on a plinth, and a cross-eyed head at that!
We only stopped in Ulan-Ude for a couple of hours, but the town seemed lime a nice place to stay for a day or two. The centre was nice and quiet (rare in Russia!!), and it finally felt as if I was in Asia. Ulan-Ude is capital of the Republic or Buryatia, and the Buryat people are quite similiar looking to the Mongolians, even if they still have names like Alexander and Svetlana.
But, the best thing about Ulan-Ude: the jingle bfore announcements at the train station was the first line of "We Wsh you a Merry Christmas". Smiles all round!
