This country is so special. And not in a retarded kind of way either. Yesterday I danced to a live salsa band in a convent in the middle of a downpour. I'm staying in a convent built in 1646. It's really lovely in a falling down, badly needs weeding way. Yesterday, all of a sudden, a curtain of rain came tumbling down. Water slid down the tiled roof and lightning lit up the grey sky. I haven't seen rain so furious in a looong time. I sat outside and watched it for a long time. In the open-air lobby/dining hall/former chapel a band struck up and when I peeked in there were about 20 people dancing in a circle. I went in and watched for a while then was invited to join. One of the ladies taught me a very simple step which I did over and over! Even though the rain was making the marble floor slick and getting dangerously close to the microphone wiring, the band played on and we danced on. Finally the rain subsided and I went out for dinner and had an early night. The food leaves much to be desired. I have lost some of my food baby (not enough though). It's so freakin hot here that you sweat like you never thought possible. If any of you wants to lose some weight, might I suggest a holiday in Cuba. Or the Balkans. Anyone who knows my travel habits knows that I rarely go the same place twice (with the exception of England, that's my second home). Having said that, I would definitely come back here. Actually, I'm thinking of coming back in the fall if possible. I want to explore this place as much as possible before the Americans destroy it (when Castro dies). There's really no other place like it. It sounds cliche, but this place really is a time capsule. There's an innocence here that is unlike any other place I've been to. Not naivite. These people are self reliant in the extreme and there's a hardness to them that can be glimpsed. But they have a generosity that would shame any philantropist. If anyone has wanted to come here, they should, and quick. There's not too much time left and people here know that this way of life won't last. See you all soon! tin tin
