Next we're off to Ntonso and Ahwiaa to see some traditional woodcarvers. At our first stop we see a group of about 10 men sitting inside a wooden box with a roof, much like a sandbox and they are all carving unity symbols. They are the coolest figures carved from one continuous piece of wood. There are no joins in the carving. I want to take some pictures and ask Prince to negotiate a price for me. Things are not going well as I can tell there are some heated discussions going on. Finally I butt in and ask Prince what's going on. He tells me they want 200,000 to take pictures. Are they nuts!? He says some priests took their pictures a while back and were selling them to the public for profit so now they want to make sure no one else does the same thing. Well, they can keep their 200,000 that is for sure. We watch a while longer and several of the shopkeepers have joined us, trying to get us to come to their shops. Nothing like the people in Bonwire but they are persistent. We buy a game we've seen people playing called Oware (pronounced oh-Wahr-ee) and although I bargain, Prince says I paid too much. Man, I just can't win! We're on the lookout for a lion for Kailey's pen pal Anne but nothing they show us is what we have in mind. Prince leads us through another alley and we come across some more carvers making the same crafts as the others and this time I am successful at negotiating a deal to take pictures. Out front we see a lone carver making a queen mother's stool. I really want to buy one of these but I just don't know how to go about getting it home. Besides, I am not supposed to buy one myself; the king must buy me one.
