Well, I was supposed to go to Muscat this day, which would have renewed my visa and given me a grand old time with my friends...but the cyclone has forced us to call off.  I should refer you to my entry on the Maldives: I'm here only in spirit.

Some of the American study abroads were going to go camping, and some of us were going to go to Muscat to do touristy things.  I was planning on meeting up with the Omanis I met at the Hatta-Wajaja border and Dubai that once, and then maybe meet up with some of the Americans in Muscat.  And we would ALL be friends.

But like I said, there is a massive storm coming to this region.  It's a cyclone, like a hurricane. Even if we wanted to go at this point, the airport is closing; and the storm could potentially strike Dubai.  Luckily, we're sort of tucked in safely on the Emirates' west coast...but STILL.  Whoever heard of a cyclone in Arabia?  Now before I go off for maybe the third time about global warming, I'm going to stop and instead mention that there is a human face to this.

If you're in the States, probably the only human face you see right now is that of Paris Hilton, the miserable little wretch, if you can call that face "human".  But it's pretty big news here: this is a Cat 5 Hurricane we're getting, potentially very deadly.  If the story has managed to break into the airwaves where you are, you've probably only heard speculations about the OIL.

And this makes me very sad.

Please don't forget about your fellow human beings here in Arabia (and I am disgusted to have to advertise the fact that many of us are Western expats, by the way).

It's sad
I never heard anything about the cyclone. I hate the news in the US and how it just delivers popular stories. Even the 24 hour news channels repeat the same 10 stories over and over and over.

Re: It's sad
Yes, yes, it is sad.

As a recovering media-junkie, I know exactly how those 24-hour stations manage to make the day drag out...over and over and over again.

And in all that free time they have, can't they mention a disaster like this ONCE?
