This is a true story. I think it's a true story, anyway, because I don't always trust what I read in 7 DAYS Newspaper.
7 DAYS is a daily British newspaper in Dubai, and it is a scream! I've seen better journalism in the News Record! Despite their innumerable typos, and their interesting selection of human interest stories (Man cooks meatballs in his own fat, Little Mermaid monument in Denmark painted pink), they also have a "Letters to the Editor" page, where respondents discuss previous articles, and also state their grievences with life in general. I like to walk over to Internet city and pick up a copy. It is a pleasant escape from life in the "Beverly Hills High School" of Dubai.
A couple of days ago, I read the following story, which I think is illustrative of something, although I can't say what for sure:
OK, so there are a number of "joy riders" in the city, some of whom get into wrecks as they go careening off the road. One woman, who was out working in the front yard, was actually struck by one such car. Although she was unscathed, she asked the driver, What if it had been one of her children who was struck? The driver was gracious enough to inform her that children die every day in Dubai!
Isn't that crazy?! To be honest, I really hope that's just an example of the British press running its mouth with it's usual sense of moral outrage. But...I hope you can understand what I'm getting at...I really suspect it's the truth. Allow me to vent my own moral outrage: What is the world coming to? And let's hear it for those lawyers (who still aren't gathering like vultures)!
But I invite you to take a look at the paper for yourself--it's a wonderful paper, and it's free!
