My mother and younger sister are quite fond of horseback riding. Sometimes, they expose me to watching the professional riders on TV and in the Olympics. Every time, I see the horses all got up and prancing around like twits in front of thousands of onlookers. And every time, I imagine that these displays must be terribly humiliating for the horse in question.
No, my mother assures me, this is not the case--these horses like showing off, and really imagine that they are something special.
I sometimes feel that way about some of my fellow peer students. Some of them--a very few of them--spend so much time trying to look nice and imitate bad American fashions that they overdo it. It's goofy. Like the woman who teases her hair six inches off her head, and glops on make-up till she resembles those Southern Baptist Spokeswomen that we meet on the religious channel. And then she tries to cover her hair?! And there's those guys who slick their hair back and look like the Greasers from the 1950's or something. Let's not forget the guys in robes--now don't get me wrong, traditional Arab clothing is, in my opinion, gracefully elegant and I do not deride it in any way. But when they wear them with baseball caps and iPods/earphones--that's goofy! Those of you who have been to AUD know what I'm talking about; those who don't, get to use their imaginations.
I hope no one thinks I'm being gossipy, catty, offensive, or immature in any way--this is merely a personal observation. But it's kind of sad that so many crappy things about American culture are so pervasive, and in so many stupid ways.
Ah well, but mine is only a biased judgement based on my own cultural perspective about the right and wrong ways to do things. Like dressage horses, if they feel elegant and good-looking, whose judgement matters but their own? They probably think I look goofy!
Have a happy day--I, for one, have a big smile on my face!
