Flag of Chile  , Valparaíso,
Monday, March 28, 2011

After another 20+ hour ride on Ruta 40, we awoke to a purple sunrise over Aconcagua, the tallest peak outside of the Himalayas, arriving in Mendoza.  The city is full of beautiful plazas, shady streets, and great restaurants.  The real draw, however, are the vineyards, which lie just outside the city.  We had a great time visiting wine country via bicycle, tasting some delicious wines and pretending to be interested in the sommelier´s speeches.

Taking a bus over the Andes, we headed to the Chilean port town of Valparaiso, which ended up being one of our favorite cities on our trip.  It`s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and truly an artists` wonderland.  Narrow alleyways, mural after mural of graffiti art, and colorful homes stacked against one another drape the many hills of the city.  We leisurely spent our days getting lost in the cobbled streets, uncovering more and more hidden treasures.
