After yet more driving, we found ourselves in Santa Monica, staying with a friend of mine named David. I've only actually met him once before, the first time I was in Vegas, and this lack of knowledge about my real character meant that he was more than happy to offer us lodging for as many days as we wanted. We settled for three.
The journey from Las Vegas to L.A. was, by the standards of the rest of the trip, a short one during which, I had another run in with US customs, or some uniformed chap anyway. When crossing into California, we were stopped by an official looking fella at a check point, asking if we were bringing any fruit in to the state. I answered 'no' at precisely the same time that Jules answered 'yes'. So, he asked again. At this point, I remembered the bag of oranges that we had bought earlier in the week. The all too familiar fear began to coarse through my veins as he asked again if we were carrying any fruit. The offending items were there for all to see on the back seat so I decided to change tack. Not quite willing to admit to my mistake, I replied, 'not that I know of...'. My new government employee friend didn't quite understand and so asked again. Visibly rattled this time, I looked down at my feet and muttered something about not packing the car so not being entirely sure, while trying to subtly nod toward Jules. At this, the man with all the power, presumably bored at my stupidity, waved us through. Once again, I had been reduced to the status of nervous wreck by one of our American cousins. I am an idiot and it seems that the question is not if it will happen again, but when.
L.A., and it's surrounding areas, were great, although the whole place sits underneath a layer of dense smog which can't be good for anyone. I was going to mention it to someone but then I thought about all the forms that I might have to fill in so I left it. I'm sure it'll be noticed soon enough. We went to some lovely bars and restaurants including one that JFK used to take some bird called Marilyn to. Well, if it was good enough for them......
David was a fantastic host and very kind for letting us stay so I say a big thank you to him.
At the end of our stay, we jumped in the car and headed for San Francisco.
Thought of the Day
And you'll never know unless you were there. Well I was, and it changed me forever.
For reference
The car needs a wash.
I didn't get my big break.
There are too many 'stars' on the pavements. I think the induction procedure should be reviewed.
