I had been warned about the smell in Roturua and when I arrived it wasn't too bad but the closer you get to the lake or any drain you get the strong stink of rotten eggs.
I got an early morning bus from Auckland and meet up with Jamie and Alexis, who recommended a cool hostel with a western theme, cactus jacks, which turned out to be a cracking hostel.
The first afternoon I spent walking around the lake and up to a moari settlement just north of the town. The area is famous for is thermal activity, therefore the sulphur smell in the air. The lake has one end which is completely white due to the sulphur!!!
The next day we went to Te Whakarekarewa a moari settlement which a combination of different thermal sites. These included boiling mud, hot pools and a famous geyser called the prince of wales, also saw my first live Kiwi!!! Later in the afternoon a bus driving recommended zobbing, so we got a bus to the agrodome to check it out. It though It was a little expensive and Id rather put my money towards a skydive. Alexis had a go, you jump in a big hollow sphere, filled with water which is pushed down a hill, only in New Zealand!!!!
Later we had a BBQ, with cheap but really good kiwi meat. After a couple of beers the night got messy. I meet to locals Andy and Antoinette, I went with them to a thermal pool outside the town, where tourist dont go. So at about 3am I was in a thermal pool, lighted with candles, looking out at the night sky....very cool.
The following morning with hangover and no sleep I jump on a bus ready for Taupo and sky diving....
