I´m battered but its been a top day today.
We woke up at 3am for a bus ride to tikal, which is 1 and half hours from Flores where we are staying. At the gate like a typical englishman I got a cup of tea and walked with the rest of the group through the dark misty jungle. Good job Matt had a touch!!!! The guide rushed ahead we had no idea where we were going and then we got to some wooden stairs. Up we climbed and only once at the top we relised we were sitting on temple 4. For the next 1 to 2 hours we sat on the temple waiting for sunrise and nibbling on some cookies we brought for breakfast. After 30mins the noise kicked in. Howler monkeys started a courus of bellows, some so deep the must of only been metres away
The guide then took us to a number of temples, letting us climb El Mundo Perido and it was here we saw our first toucan, bright yellow and blue beak with a purple tip. Dad´s binoculars became very handing and spotting the wildlife in the jungle.
Next stop was the grand plaza, which most people assoicate with Tikal. Two giant temples (1 and 2) surrounded by numerous over ruins. The mist was still around the peaks of the temples which gave the perfect mood. After a quick talk on the history we were left to explore the ruins.
We decided to walk around the back of the ruins, great idea has we saw here our first spider monkeys and followed then through the trees. After visiting further afield groups of temples we decided to finish our visit where we started on top of temple 4. Here you could now see visably the other temple tops standing above the rainforest canopy. There are 7 large temples in all representing the giant bear star formation. The best thing about the site is its scale and that restoration is still taking place. Its only really temple 1 and 2 that have been restore the others will look even more spectacular in 20 or so years.
Now back in Flores sorted out the buses to Belize tomorrow.
