After a sweaty stinky long day in Villahermosa we arrived in Palenque and found the nearest hotel called YAN KUX which was perfect 150 pesos for a double room, thats less than 4 punds each.
Day 1 After a broken lie in from the cockrels and playing children outside we finally ventured outside about 1pm. Palenque town was not great, most travelers stay in el remante on the road to ruins. After checking the internet we tried out some travel agents to find a trip to the waterfalls. Most were really expensive so we decided to look around the bus station for a onward trip to San Cristobel. At the bus station we bumped into Laura and Johannis who id meet in Puerto Escondido. Laura speaks very good spanish and suggested getting a ride to the falls by local transport. The ride was really local, a pick up truck with a cage of the back for us to sit in. After a 15 minute ride we got out a turn off in the jungle road. Another 25 minute walk brought us to the Misol Ha falls, the most amazing falls deep in the jungle.
The water was safe to swim so we jumped, im only gutted that my diving camera run out of batteries. Yourll see the pictures on my blog it was like something out the film the beach...just amazing. Later that night we had pizza as a group and said goodbye to Laura and Johannis as they got on a bus to Mexico City. Afterwards we had a couple of beers looking at the police driving past with automatic rifles and body armour...nice. Aparently there had been some local unrest in the area and the Chipas area has its own freedom fighting group. Day 2 We awoke early to visit the ancient ruins of Palenque. A mayan city deep in the jungle inhabited from 100bc. The site is just amazing and easily tops anything I have seen so far. Yourll see from the photos the temple vary from large pyramids to some that have trees growing from within the ruins. As you enter the site two large pyramids are on the right and infront in the palace with a tower unique to the mayan world. Behind this are religous buildings, one which is the biggest on the site. Because we arrived so early we pretty much had a temple to ourselves. Also within the site is a ball court and a building some crazy monk lived on for years. We spent about four hours here then returned to the town ready for our bus ride to San Cristobel
