I spent my second day in Poland visiting the German death camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau situated 60km East of Krakow towards the German border. In 27 months 1.5million people died here. The Nazi's wanted to double the size of the site to kill 11million Jews and political prisoners. It snowed all day and gave the impression of how the day would have been for the many that suffered here. Most shooking was the rooms filled with paoples hair and belongings and of course the one remining gas chamber, which had finger nail scratch marks on the walls.
At the end of the day I travelled to the Salt mines in Wieliczka to see 700 years in ther making. The mines are full of underground chapels and carvings, however I think our guide made the tour as other backpackers had not enjoyed the site.
