Alas, the discomfort was worth it -- we had a great time with our friends. That is one wonderful thing about this trip...it is really making us appreciate the time we are spending with our family and friends and how much they are willing to go out of their way for us. For example, when we got to the Mexican Border in Campo, Tony picked us up and insisted we stay with him and Laurel. The next day, our friend Brian gave us a ride from San Diego to Shirley's parents' place near Los Angeles. Last weekend, Shirley and about 20 of our friends threw a surprise get-together for Yannick...and he was so dumbfounded, so happy, so touched, words can't fully describe what he felt. Let's just say we are both feeling very loved and very grateful to be surrounded by such caring people.
With being spoiled rotten to the core, we are still managing to take care of business. We went back to the doctor today for the second series of our vaccinations and should be finishing the last round in a couple weeks. Having at least two more weeks is giving us time to prepare our bicycles and do some test rides, get our paperwork in order, and fine-tune the gear list. We are starting to look at maps and guide books -- we still haven't decided on our route, but at least we know the general direction we're going!
We have also chosen to dedicate Phase 3 of our Transcontinental Triathlon as a means to raise $20,000 for MedShare, a non-profit that collects un-used medical supplies from hospitals and warehouses and ships them to needy hospitals around the world. What MedShare is doing not only helps people get the healthcare they need, but each shipping container full of supplies diverts 6 tons of material from ending up as trash in landfills. As we head South on our bicycles, we will pedal to help people in under-developed countries obtain the medical services they need.
