Where I stayed
I almost didn´t make it. My first flight via Frankfurt was canceled because low cloud meant that the plain couldn´t land. After a 3 o´clock start this was already quite a strain on my patience. Lufthansa proceeded to keep me hanging around for ever, but eventually I got bundled into a taxi to Heathrow to fly with Virgin instead via Miami. I should probably be grateful, as I´m pretty sure Virgin was a big improvement on Condor. Having got to Heathrow though, they wouldn´t let me check in because I hadn´t got a SEPTA, which sounds like part of your nose, but is in fact some kind of replacement for a visa that you now need to visit the States. With twenty minutes until check in closed I dashed upstairs to find a cybercafe. Having fed one of the bastard machines all my change, it proceeded to allow me to go wherever I wanted except to the SEPTA application website. Furious and slightly incoherent with mumbled threats against Lufthansa for not telling me I´d need to do this, and the inbreds who ran the cybercafe, I tore off to find a cash point. Hershey bars aren´t very nice, I know this because I then had to buy one to get the change. Luckily this time the internet worked and I managed to fill in the form just in time to check in.
My taxi driver to Heathrow was a Portuguese guy called Philip. He was very friendly, and after discovering where I was off to shared the benefit of his traveling experience with me. This involved rather of lot of telling me about the dangers of Rio, and how South American organ traffickers like to kill and harvest the organs from westerners as we are more likely to be healthy than the locals. So far, so reassuring. He then insisted that I should not be worried at all, and instructed me how to seduce South American girls.
He explained that people in the West pay money to do something as a way to have fun, but people in poorer countries don´t have the money for things like the theatre, so they have fun with themselves by dancing, singing and having sex. He also explained that South American girls are not all aloof like English girls, but are ´hot blooded´, and they like foreign men because we are ´a challenge´ and ´exotic´. This was accompanied by many suggestive looks. I don´t think I will ever be described as exotic, but Philip was adamant that all you need to do is be bold and a bit cheeky and you´ll be beating women off with a stick from Santiago to Sao Paolo. Whether these were simply his fevered daydreams or not I have no idea. Ask me at the end of the trip.
After this everything got a lot easier, and I arrived in Cancun only three hours later than expected, and got the bus down to Playa del Carmen. My hostel friendly and lively; a Little too lively for somebody who´s been on the go for 26 hours, but I slept, and here I am feeling pretty chipper. My first youth hostel dormitory experience was pretty civilised, and will probably serve as a good preparation for life on the base at Pez Maya, where I must go now. I won´t have internet for at least a week now, so hopefully I´ll have plenty to put in my next entry...
