I made it safely to the South Island after the ferry crossing from hell. It wasn't actually as bad as it could have been as the return journey back to the North Island made front page news when a lorry fell on top of some cars. There were 10m swells, it felt like being on a roller coaster - your stomach would go as the ferry rocked violently from side to side. I was glad to reach Picton. Unfortunately due to the weather I was unable to get out to the Queen Charlotte Wilderness Park so I had to spend the night in Picton. Being a very windy day I spent most of it inside and ended up talking to a guy with a birthday the same day as mine!
Anyway, the following afternoon I was able to catch the boat out through the Marlborough Sounds to the Wilderness Park. On our way out we passed through a pod of dolphins. There must have been about 100 of them and they swam and jumped alongside the boat - it was pretty spectacular! The park is on a peninsula and is only accessible by boat, which takes an hour and a half or on foot, which takes 4-5 days.
I'm staying in a house - well it's a converted woolshed - with another wwoofer (willing workers on organic farms), Lynn from America, 2 dogs called Smudge and Holly, a cat called Russell, a rabbit called Coco and 2 fish called Fillet and Jaws. In between looking after all the animals we cook dinner for guests staying at the wilderness park and clean the rooms when they leave, the rest of the day we have free to enjoy the park! Unfortunately due to the worst storms New Zealand have had in the last century I've not been able to see much. Last night we had to cook a 3 course dinner for 8 people. Half way through we had a power cut. Amazingly we managed to cook the meal on a gas barbecue. We had a huge lightning storm and I was amazed to watch the wind blow a waterfall backwards up a hill. Unfortunately half the people in Picton had to be evacuated when the dam burst. It's been nice and sunny today though and we've had no guests so we've just been lazing around in the sun!
