What I did
First thing I had to stomach again was that gosh darn euro! It makes everything so damn expensive...why I remember the days in Europe where a backpacker could live like a king for just a shiny nickle! We would bathe in showers of beer and eat at 5 star restaurants and hire the local people to carry us around on their backs....
My next 3 weeks in Germany were GLORIOUS
How could things could any better you may ask? On the bottom floor Ozzy's mom ran a local restaurant and whipped up the most amazing traditional dishes fit for a king! And when I say fit for a king I really mean it. King Ludwig's relatives still come by to eat her legendary cooking.
Staying with Jesse and Ozzy was too good to be true..every morning Jesse and I would grab some amazingly high quality coffee and take the dogs for a walk. All of this added up to a most delightful stay. Jesse is in million different bands and he kept me quite busy jumping from one gig to the next. Lucky for me they were in all my favorite bars! A million thanks out to Jesse and Ozzie!!!
Another main reason I came to Germany was to attend Oktoberfest
The beer and food are some key elements that I missed about Germany. So I wasted no time in procuring an Augustiner the moment I got off the plane. In my circle of ex-gappers Auggie is the pinnacle of Bavarian beer. It's also a beer that cannot be bought in America thus making it more of a sacred cow. Imagine my surprise when I showed up to Garmisch and most everyone was drinking a different beer!! SACRILEGE!! How could this happen! Most people were drinking Land-Bier and Munchier-Hell.....I was disgusted...until I tried it....and then I saw the light....I still feel like I'm cheating on Auggie but as Ozzy likes to say..."it's more of an open relationship"...from time to time I will drink Auggie but these new beers (only new to me) are truly lechier!
Besides drink myself silly, I also wanted to eat the famous Turkish kebabs
Catching up with old friends is always a highlight of a visit to GAP. This is only interesting if your an ex-gapper....Jesse, Ozzy, Jamie, Helmet, Josh Womak, Jeff Harbor, Howard, Matt, Dre, Tim, Ron, Rue and their boys, Jake and his daughter, Paul, PX Ron, PX Chris, Sarah Barrnette and Christoff. I think that covers the lot!
The rest of my time I re-hiked my favorite trails and even did some new exploring in Farchant and Oldstadt. I re-visited all the old stomping grounds as well as discovering new ones. I even crashed on a bike which no stay in Garmisch would be complete without! I remember thinking as I was falling "is this really happening again?" Bruised and bloodied I could blame myself!
To me, Garmisch is so beautiful that I could not stop taking pictures
I ended up staying in Garmisch about 2 weeks longer than I had intended due to Dave the Dick (that's his Christian name) booking his ticket way later than he had originally said (don't trust that guy) Finally he gave me an exact day and our break neck tour of Eastern Europe would begin in Slovenia. I will now hand over the reins of the travel-pod to Skinny McPotbelly (that's his street name) so that I can focus on pictures! Bring on the Balkans!
