Road Trip to Washington

ROAD TRIP!!!!! My car needed to get from San Diego to its new home Seattle. The Golden Ramrod of Justice (my car's name) had been sitting in Las Vegas/San Diego for almost 11 months. My little car is going to last forever since I drive it only a couple months a year. After sitting for so long I expected some tune-ups to be in order before setting off on a long journey. Much to my surprise the Ramrod started right up, ran smoothly, needed no air, no oil change....nothing!!! Simply put... my car is magical!
San Diego: Zoe and I flew in and we were picked up by April (a friend from Yellowstone). We were able to catch up over a late lazy breakfast. Our general plan was to stay for a week in San Diego since we knew the most people and it was going to be the warmest part of out trip. The only problem is that I was fighting off a wicked cold the entire time so all my plans to meet my friend and rage were thwarted
Atascadaro: The first night we stopped in Atascadro to stay with my relatives the Ferguson's. It was great to catch up with them again. We had some cake for Zoe's birthday before all piling in the hot tub to relax. The next day we set out drive route 1 also know at the Pacific crest highway. This famous coastal route goes from southern California all the way to Canada. True to its name it basically parrells the ocean the whole way. The scenery is fantastic but the going is slow! Windy roads, low speed limits and quaint beach towns slows traffic to a crawl but with sweeping ocean views who cares! We had no real itinerary once we got on the costal route.
Our loose plan was to drive north and camp when it got dark
Our next major stop was San Fransisco. We caught up with one of Zoe's friends for one night before heading to the other side of town to visit our co-workers from Maine. (Mary and Mariah). As luck would have it San Fransisco was brilliantly sunny the entire time! Once again we killed a day wondering around San Fran and exploring Marin Headlands state park.. This was my....I don't know... 8th time to San Fran? and I had never been to this place. It was sweet! The views of golden gate, open ocean and Alcatraz were unbeatable...throw in some hiking trails, light houses and wildlife and you got yourself a killer park. Later that night I was able to catch up with a buddy from Germany (Chris Hutchison) It would great to see him again even though he has become morbidly obese with a gambling problem....
Back on the road we followed route 101 through wine country. The landscapes was beautiful!. We rolled past herds of elk into the emerald triangle. Here's a little info from Wiki..... The name refers to the three counties it emcompasses. The three are the biggest marijuana producing counties in California and also the USA. A county-commissioned study reports marijuana accounts for up to two-thirds of economy of Mendicino! We thought about camping but with temperatures near freezing and camping fees being only 10 bucks more than a warm hotel room we opted for the later. Garberville is famous for the reggae festival and every room we checked out reeked of Marijuana. It was quirky little town with its fair share of characters and run down hotels.
The next day we found out way into Humbolt redwood wood park. These redwoods trees are simply massive. We wandered around random hiking paths that went in and around these giants. I I even took ramrod through the famous drive-thru trees. Once we had got our fill of redwoods we hit the road and drove straight through to Portland. We hung out here a couple of days and visited various friends and hit the Rouge Brewery. I dug Portland its like smaller version of Seattle thats easier to navigate.
The last stretch was up to Snohomish Washington to visit Zoe's aunt and uncle. Her relatives could not have been more giving! They took us snowboarding, made a Thanksgiving meal of Dungeons crab masala, treated us to some killer Indian and Thai restaurants and bought our Apple Cup tickets! I could not have asked for a better end to our road trip!
