Flying into Cancun was a bit different than most my traveling experiences.  First of all I was surrounded by American college kids in the customs lines making me feel rather old.  Not being a fan of huge expensive vacation spots that lacks the dirty backpacker vibe, I headed south to a town called Tulum.  The is a small town with a gorgeous beach and a big backpacker population.  I ended up staying here for 6 days, partly because I was waiting to see if Dave was going to book his ticket to Cancun and travel with me for 20 days and partly because I made a good gang of friends that made leaving impossible.  They even hid my backpack the last day so I would not go!
While I was hanging out in Tulum I check out some seaside Mayan ruins and some located deeper in in the jungle in Coba.  Both ruins were in impressive since they were my first.  Most people I  met were sick of ruins since they seen so many in central America ( much like churches in Europe)  I could give you a history lesson here about how amazing the Mayans were but I will save it for when I have caught up on my entries a) Tulum beach
a) Tulum beach

Life in a beach town is pretty simple...you get up, eat a free huge breakfast, catch a bus to the beach, swim, catch some rays, play frisbee and backgammon.  Since I brought my own backgammon board I feel like I'm a backgammon missionary,,,, teaching backpackers all around central america how to play and if they don't learn then of course they will burn in the fires of hell for ever and ever....  AMEN.   The best opponents are the Israelis... they play all the time in Israel and are always up for a game.
Besides the beach, I did swim in  cenote mangrove with crystal blue water that was covered in underwater caves.  The day before I left there was a massive beach party at a swanky little bar.  There were stilt walkers and fire twirlers all dancing to some hard core trance!  I ended up hitching hiking home at 3 AM to my hostel and was extremely lucky to be picked up and dropped off right where I neede.
Since Dave finally booked his ticket to Cancun, I decided to go wait for him on an island of the coast of the Yucatan by Cancun.  So instead of heading straight to Belize I hung out on this little Island.  Most backpackers I met had done central American and were all flying out of Cancun this was good thing since they were chalk full of much need travel information!
