We rented a car in Mainz and headed up to Denmark for Simonīs wedding. The was my first time paying European gas prices and let me tell was awesome!!! I donīt think I can ever complain about gas prices in the states again. Letīs see: for one gallon of gas I paid...$6.60!! For you Euros thatīs 1.30 Euro a liter. This hurt, it hurt real bad, but it worked out cheaper than taking the train and faster than hitchhiking so it had to be done! The autobahn is fun though, I do like the fact that we could drive as fast as we wanted. Even though we rented the cheapest car money could rent we (mainly Chelise) still cruised at 150-170 km/h (93mph-105mph) but then the car starts shaking and so do we. Even at this speed cars still shot past us like we were standing still.
We arrived in Horsens 8 hours later and decided to camp due to the fact that everything in Denmarks was typical European prices if not a little more. The next morning we met Simon and his new wife Jessica for breakfast. We caught up over some coffee and then once again decided to go check out the town with Simonīs parents. Horsens is a very small town that only has a 6 weeks tourist season. Since that season was over, the local people were very interested to know what the hell we were doing there. The town itself it pretty and it sits right on a harbour.
We went for a mini pub crawl with Simon parents and actually met a lot of local Danish bar patrons. The Danish have to be the nicest people I have met in my travels. Every bar we went into we met another interesting, easy-to-talk-to local and 90% of the time they would buy us a drink (drinks in Denmark are not cheap!)
Jess & Simonīs wedding party consisted of Chelise, Me, his parents and 2 ladies we met at one of the bars and Jess invited them to the wedding! Once again an example of how cool the Danish are. The 2 ladies from the bar showed up on time (before us) with flowers, card and a digital video camera so they could record the wedding and give Simon and Jess the DVD. I was truly impressed with the generous nature of the Danes! The ceremony was as follows:
Are You Simon Leighton...Are you Jessica James....Do you take...? Do you take...? You are now man and wife.....It happened so fast I did not even have time to turn on my camera! The photo taking took longer than the ceremony! After they got married we threw some rice on them and then headed out to have a post-wedding lunch at Horsens Yacht Club! It was beautifully sunny and Simonīs parents shouted us all lunch (thanks Alan and )!
We spent the rest of the day sitting in the sun drinking cocktails and basking in the newlywedsī presence. The next morning Chelise and I drove 10 hours to Garmisch - almost the entire length of Germany!
