The jews and muslims moved here years ago to escape persecution and the jews painted the city sky blue. It is really pretty and makes for some awesome photos. Unfortunately the people don't like to be photographed so we've had to be stealth. A lot of them wear these really cool coats with hoods like Obi 1 Kanobe wore in the desert in Star Wars. Ben wants one. It's quite hot here and we are pretty dumb...Africa in the middle of summer - yes please!!
We have spent our days drinking fresh orange juice, eating couscous and finally getting on the internet. Morocco is cheap, but not as cheap as an African country should be. The Europeans are buying houses here and driving up the prices so Moroccans can't afford to buy a house. The government is leaning on the weed producers after getting pressure from Europe to make the weed illegal. It's their #1 way to make money in this town. Everyone thinks we're Australian which is good. We haven't been hassled too agressively although if you start to talk to a Moroccan local they think you want to buy weed. So you'll have a nice conversation with them and it will turn to hash and when you say you don't want it they get really pissed and walk away. Nice conversation ended. It's like any poor country we've been in. If a local talks to you it's usually because they're leading up to a sale of some kind.
Yesterday we decided to go for a walk to see these fields of marijuana and ended up hiking up and over the mountain and then back the way we came with some guys from Casablanca we met. We thought we would get to a town and be able to do a circuit or catch a taxi back but we were wrong. We hiked for 10 hours with no water refills after the first hour and in the last hour. Thank allah the Moroccan guys shared their lunch with us. Anyway we saw so much weed in fields it was crazy. It's not guarded either. We saw little boys guarding goats and families drying the weed on their roofs. We were wrecked after the hike and made it back after dark.
We have found a fantastic sandwich shop that sells a roll with everything you could imagine it it for about 70 cents. The orange juice is about 75 cents and the internet is about 50cents - 1 Euro an hour. It's pretty relaxed here and they're used to tourists.
I think from here on in it will get crazy.
