From Pakse we headed North to Savanakhet where we had stayed on the way down. Once again we took a local bus and weren't stared at quite as much this time until we bought lunch. The ladies coming to the window with food had sticks with big crickets on them and Ben was eager to try them. All the people watched as we tried the cooked crickets. I even ate a whole one. They have quite a strong taste and actually taste pretty decent. Once we got to our destination we headed straight for Mama's restaurant because she'd given us advice last time and we knew she'd tell us what day to leave for Vietnam and how. When we got there she remembered us and actually invited us to stay in her room so we wouldn't have to pay for a guesthous. Fantastic! The only condition was that we eat there which is easy because she has so many movies we'd like to watch, we even have cable in the bedroom. She's going to open up a souviner shop, bar with cocktails and eventually guesthouse so I am going to do her a favour and write to some guide books as she's only just opened up.
We will be leaving Laos tomorrow and will be glad to go to another country, but sad also because Laos isn't very populated and not very touristy unlike the overdone Thailand. It's very beautiful and still quite raw. Don't miss it if you come to Asia and don't be one of those people who follow the tourist trail and miss the South.
We will put a couple of pictures up soon.
