So Buenos Aires is my new favourite South American city, I just love it, with all of its unique barrios and colonial buildings!!! After a 20 hour night bus I finally arrived and with a little water splashed on my face I was ready to explore the city. I mainly spent the morning wandering around the center taking in the beauty of all the old gorgeous colonial buildings lining the wide avenus. I saw the famous Casa Rosada (presidential palace) where Evita made her famous balcony appearance, the beautiful main cathedral which houses the tomb of liberator San Martin and the Cabildo building which was used for the town council in colonial times and apparently the white arches on the facade of this building used to surrounf the entire Plaza de Mayo in colonial times. Afterwards I just spent some time in the Plazo de Mayo (whose monument represents the May Revolution of 1810) just soaking up the atmosphere.
In the afternoon I went to the Recoleta cemetary, home to the ornate mausoleums of several famous Argentines, like Evita. Itīs like a miniature city with the largest and most ornate stone and marble mausoleums I have ever seen. It reminded me of the kind of crypts you see in vampire movies. I must also mention that the gray rainy day was perfcet for romping through a cemetary, I think it added that little something extra. Unfortunately though the Teatro Colon which is supposedly one of the most beautiful opera houses was closed for restoration, you couldnīt even get a good look at the exterior because it was covered in scaffolding. Oh well next time. While I was in Buenos Aires I also took in a tango dinner show, it was incredible, the way the dancers moved itīs a wonder they donīt trip over their own feet (I know I would). I also spent a day wondering the cobbled streets and parks of Palermo (one of the barrios), I just wish the weather had been better.
