Where I stayed
We arrived at the Black Hills & Prairies of South Dakota. There was heaps of bison by the road. We passed a Wal Mart in a town & bought a new dome tent which was so quick to put up & set up camp in Custer State Park for a few nights where we could do day trips from.
Camping life is so good…especially sitting around the campfire at night. Camping dinners were easy – lots of jaffles.
Did heaps of fun stuff – boating activities in paddle boats, row boats & kayaks. On dusk we did the nature loop drive & saw bison, burros, deer & prarie dogs. We walked around Lake Sylvan & the boy swam to this massive rock in the middle & then jumped off it
I loved the many tunnels we drove through that were only 1 car wide & often framed the presidents heads. ( Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt & Lincoln)
Mt Rushmore was the highlight. These presidents heads are just massive & were completed in 1941. Much of the carving was done by explosives & then hanging over the edge of the cliff to do it by hand. The tower up at 5,500 feet & each head is as tall as a 6 story building
We were in the Black Hills while the Sturgess Bike Rally was in & there were thousands of bikes
We got up really early one day to do this 5 hour hike to the top of Harney peak. It took us 4 hours. When the boys got tired they stopped to lean against Brad to re-charge. The view from the top was so worth it! The summit is mostly bare of trees with uninhibited & spectacular views. There is an old stone two that was used as a fire lookout on the summit which is no longer in use
On our last night we camped at a lake in Wyoming. Nobody wanted to go home & we were all keen to keep heading north to North Dakota & Canada!!! Was one of our best holidays
