Nice day. After breakfast went for walk around Alston - everything so pretty covered in snow. The snow plough had already cleared the roads. We drove up to Haltwhistle and saw Hadrian's Wall weaving across the countryside.
We stopped at Housesteads, a Roman fort and walked up along steep hill to the Wall. Drifts of snow lying on the ground and we threw snowballs at each other. We walked along the wall with beautiful views of the countryside as it was so high up. We then drove through lovely country to Chollerford and up to Rothbury where we stopped for lunch. Lovely little town with high hills with pine forests around. Saw Cragside Hall up in the hills. Drove up to Alnwick, little market town and saw castle by the river. All intact and massive - very impressive.
Drove up to coast through little villages such as Seahouses. Sandy beaches and very pretty village of Bamburgh has huge castle on top of rocks and cliffs by sea. Monstrous. Pretty little houses. Drove around the bay and drove across long causeway to Holy Island. Has areas of quicksand and unexploded missiles. Nice little village with Lindisfarne Priory in ruins and the castle which is only small and sitting high on a rock. Set off back across causeway and near the end water already coming back across - very scary.
Drove through town of Berwick-upon-Tweed and up to Edinburgh. Busy town and huge. Nice houses. Drove along main street, Princes Street, and found guesthouse 14 pounds double own shower and had coin meter. Went for dinner at a Pizzarama - cheap ten pounds for 3 course meal each. Lots of restaurants and people. Castle, cathedral, monuments look so impressive lit up at night.
