Sitting at breakfast and it was raining, but it was really snowing, so we ran outside to see. Melted as soon as it hit you. I went to town by myself and bought 2 pr boots for 38 pounds, 1 dress 19 pounds, 1 skirt 11 pounds, 1 top ten pounds. We left York at about 11.30 am. Drove up to Ripon and across Moors. Just past Pateley Bridge it started to snow and then we drove across big drifts by side of road. As we drove further into this area, snow everywhere and mountains covered with it. Brad very childish and would not stop throwing snowballs at me.
We were so excited and it looks so beautiful. Stopped for pub lunch in tiny village of Greenhow Hill - heaps of snow everywhere and on rooves. Old pub with beautiful fire as it is very cold outside. Little villages very cute - all built of stone. Beautiful drive. Drove to Castle Bolton - very tiny little village and saw the castle where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned for 6 months.
Drove down through James Herriot country - villages of East Witton, Masham, West Tanfield. All stone and stone walls. Beautiful bridges over rivers. Drove past Jervaulx Abbey. Drove through Skipton on Swale and Preston Under Scar through Thirsk to Helmsley. This is now area of North York Moors. Very pretty. Saw ruined Helmsley Castle and drove to village of Rievaulx to see ruined abbey. In little village in wooded valley. Drove through Stokesly and through industrial Middlesbrough and on motorways to Durham. Arrived at dark. Drove round town twice looking for B and B - no signs. Found one at top of steep narrow lane 7 pounds each. Bought takeaway Chinese 4 pounds. Cathedral and Norman Castle look impressive - will explore tomorrow.
