Today we did different things. Col went on the group ride and I stayed around town. Others in the group visited the 'Tank Museum' and the 'Cadre Noir - the National Riding School'. There is no public transport to any of the attractions around Saumur, and as the car has now been returned, my choices were limited. So I started late and wandered the streets. Attempted to do some retail therapy but nothing really grabbed me. Had my Noisette coffee in a picturesque little square and did some people watching. Later on I had a goat's cheese and asparagus quiche for lunch which was yummo. Also managed to read some of my current book - 'Almost French' by Sarah Turnbull. Most enlightening on the French and their way of life from an Australian journalist's perception. Thanks Jennifer for recommending it. Then I did some mundane things like re-packing the bags as we leave here tomorrow. Staying three nights in the same hotel has been great but it means you tend to leave things hanging around rather than back into the bags.
Col in the meantime set off at the later time of 9.30 and rode to Breze via a market and a mushroom farm, located in one of the many caves around this area. Chateau Breze was built between 11th and 19th centuries and has a large underground network of tunnels and caves - the largest underground fortress in Europe. It also has the deepest moat in Europe reaching 18 metres.
The cyclists arrived back about 4pm - time for a rest before heading out for a final dinner together.
A most enjoyable time was had by all sharing reflections on the last 12 days together. Then a final drink in our favourite square in Saumur and back to the hotel.
Off to Vitre tomorrow to spend 3 nights with our couch surfing friends Carole and Yoann. We have 3 trains to catch so hope the connections work out and there are not too many stairs to take the bags up and down at the stations.
