With a bad first impression of Poprad as we pulled into the station, we consulted the "bible" which advised to stay in Stary Smokovec, a village 30min away by electric train in the hills.  Thank you Lonely Planet as it was lonely.  Went for a brief foray into the Mts, saw ragin river tumbling over rocks and back down via funicular railway.  Mts very beautiful and ideal for hiking hade we more time.  Tried the local plum vodka with sprite which went down nicely and made ourselves a big pot of hearty gulasch soup!! however our pension didn't have any cutler so we had to share my one travel spoon, but hey ho, the things you do when you're travelling :-)

From here we also did a day trip to Liptovsky Mikolaus to see an ice cave.  As luck was having it that day we were waiting constantly for public transport only to find out when we finally go thtere that we had missed the last tour by 20mins!!  Just then a tour bus truned up and they had booked a speical tour whitch we were allowed to join, even if we didn't understand any commentary we were just pleased to get in.  1st 1/2 no ice, many stalagtites and graffitti from previous visitors.  THe ice part wasn't breathtaking as we had expected but htere were some cool ice 'spews' out of gaping holes and river of ice.  Unsurprisingly we had to wait 1 1/2 hoours for a bus during which time we played frisbee then of course our train was delayed 60mins.  a long yet enjoyable day.
