Labuan Bajo. Not doing much of anything other than get my WIFI fix, wait for Manu, research next steps, reflect on the time with Vera. Being around her made me aware of how negative my communication (still? Or again?) is. I thought I am a much more positive, certainly happy, person than I was growing up. But my language does not necessarily reflect that. In Vera's presence I often felt like the "Complainerator". By no means am I miserable, but you’d think I was if you pay attention to what I mumble all day long. Possibly, it merely is the overdose of travel and curbed appetite for adventure by now? Likely, it is my way of making conversation when there isn't really anything to be said, just to fill the quiet. Certainly, it is my nature to express the negative, yet be quiet about the positive. I fear this blog might reflect that in some ways (though the negative events often just make for more fun stories to write about). Forgive me if that is the case.
I guess you can take the Henni out of Germany, but not the German out of Henni. Vera made me catch myself saying negative things without really being negatively impacted by them. One prime example that particularly stuck out as typical case for me: In front of me some guy with hair down to his thighs. Me noting how I hate long hair like this on people, I think it's gross (with few exceptions of people I got to know and are dear to me, I must add). Does it really make any difference to my life? Nope. Do I really hate it? It's a strong choice of word to express something completely and utterly irrelevant to my life.
It’s a common German thing I daresay, especially with many in my family. Like a silly way of making conversation or filling the quiet. The equivalent of talking about the weather in Canada. Gotta keep working on expressing the good stuff and not bothering to speak out the less pleasant if it isn’t really relevant to my general well being.

The news about Osama’s death arrives while I am skyping with Shaista in a loungy café overlooking the harbour. Not to compare the significance of events, but it reminds me of Princess Diana’s death which I learned about while on vacation in Samos/Greece with Manu, Stine, my then boyfriend and another high school friend Rene. Must have been 1996 or 1997. Time flies.

Manu arrives several days later after a monstrous journey from Lombok including a near death experience on a fisherman’s boat. When I pick her up from the harbour she is soaked, shook and a bit besides herself. Her biggest worry after having just gotten off a rickety small boat that nearly drowned, was if her Mac survived the ordeal. It did. And I am relieved to have her back in one piece, with or without Mac.
